Disabled Veteran Benefits by State
State-specific VA resources, regional offices, veteran population data, and state benefits for disabled veterans.
Your VA disability compensation is set by federal law and does not change when you move — but almost everything else about being a disabled veteran does. Property tax exemptions, vehicle registration waivers, free hunting and fishing licenses, in-state tuition waivers, state veterans homes, and local VA office services depend on where you live. The state guides on this page document the state-specific benefits that stack on top of your federal compensation, plus the actual VA Medical Centers and Regional Offices serving each state.
A few states are worth highlighting because their state-level benefits substantially change the math for disabled veterans. Texas offers a tiered property tax exemption that goes to a full exemption at 100% disability and adds the Hazlewood Act for tuition. Florida offers a full property tax exemption on a qualifying homestead to veterans with a service-connected permanent and total disability who meet state residency requirements. Florida also has no state income tax. California offers the Disabled Veterans' Property Tax Exemption with a low- and basic-income tier that scales annually. Several states (including Texas, Florida, Wyoming, and Tennessee) have no state individual income tax. VA disability compensation is tax-exempt regardless of which state you live in; state treatment of military retirement pay and other income varies. Check the rules in each guide before comparing costs.
Your residential address generally determines geographic oversight and your local VA Regional Office contact. Actual rating-claim processing can take place elsewhere: VA’s National Work Queue distributes claims nationwide according to available capacity. Local office workloads or historical grant rates therefore do not predict your claim’s outcome or speed, and moving states is not a way to select favorable processing. Each guide lists the local Regional Office (and its address), the major VA Medical Centers in the state, and the state-specific tip we would give a veteran filing from that location. For the federal claims process itself — which is identical in every state — see How to File a VA Disability Claim.
